Motor Racing in Guyana

Motor Racing has been a popular sport in Guyana for well over fifty years featuring all classes of Motor Cycles, Motor Cars and Go-Karts. Speedsters generally used the roadways for Drag Racing and Dirt Bike Racing was hosted at popular community grounds.

With Motor Racing gaining in popularity, the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club was formed and has since mobilised the construction of Guyana’s major Motor Racing Track – the South Dakota Circuit at Timehri and organised annual Racing Meets.

Since the turn of the century Guyana has seen rapid annual economic growth and a IMG_1377renewed and continuing increased interest in motor racing. The GMRSC has since been hosting a series of events annually at Timehri to include March and November Race Meets, Drag Racing and Endurance Racing. The Club also operates a Go-Kart Track at its Club House Complex in Georgetown where the next generation of racers are unveiled.

The small circuit at South Dakota has been resurfaced with support from the Government and Private Sector. Additionally, the annual Caribbean Motor Racing Championships between Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica was relaunched as a three stage event starting in Jamaica and ending at the GMRSC sponsored November International Race Meeting where the Caribbean Champions are declared.

Thousands of visitors and local race fans throng to the Timehri Racing Circuit annually to support their favourite racing Champions. It is quite a spectacle to see the powerful beasts of speed being expertly and fiercely driven around the Circuit in search of victory.
